Whether he loves stocking his cellar with age-worthy wines, or prefers popping open bottles to drink right away, we have a range of options.
Fratelli Pardi, Sacrantino Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG
Sacrantino is a bold and powerful wine, with an outstanding complexity of flavours and a smooth and velvety mouthfeel. The grape used, Sagrantino, is one of Italy’s most tannic and it’s really hard to master – which is why this wine is so exceptional. Aged for a long period of four years, Sacrantino is among the best wines of the area: it has won Gambero Rosso’s “three glasses” in 2020 and “two red glasses” in 2021, as well as “Three golden stars” by Veronelli. Fratelli Pardi is a family winery which is over a hundred years old. It’s one of a few wineries in Montefalco recommended by Ian D’Agata in his encyclopaedia “Native wine grapes of Italy”. We’re sure this wine will be an outstanding gift!
K.Martini Maturum Lagrein Riserva
If your dad likes to try new things, give him this cool-climate red from Alto Adige. Lagrein is the signature red grape of the region, and is still quite under-the-radar in the UK. This version is made by the Swiss-Italian winemaking family, K.Martini & Sohn. It has complex aromas of cherry, dark chocolate and black pepper with interesting floral notes of violet and rose petals. This highly-awarded wine took home the Decanter “Best in Show” title in 2020.
Rubinelli Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG
This excellent Amarone has expressive flavours of dried fig, tobacco and leather with a touch of red fruit freshness. It’s made by the Rubinelli family, who have been producing Amarone wines for more than a century. The process involves partially drying the grapes, which are picked early to preserve acidity, in special drying lofts. This helps to concentrate the flavours in the wine. It also concentrates the sugars, which are mostly converted into alcohol – making this a dry but powerful wine.
Demarie Barolo DOCG Riserva
Discerning dads will be delighted by this Barolo Riserva. Riserva wines are only declared in the very best years, and this one is made from Demarie’s best grapes of the vintage; grown on 50 year old vines in the comune of La Morra. The flavour is seriously complex, with every sip bringing a new sensation. Blackberry, black cherry, black plum, prunes, black pepper, fig, tobacco and leather are just a few of the things we tasted.
Francone Barbaresco DOCG Gallina Cru
Barbaresco is one of Italy’s finest wines, and this Decanter Gold-winner makes an excellent father’s day gift. The Nebbiolo grapes used to make the wine are grown on Gallina hill, one of the most valuable and historic crus in the Neive area. Environmentally-conscious dads will be impressed to hear that it’s produced using the “Green Experience” system. This movement began in Piedmont, with strict rules for eco-friendly grape growing that take organic winemaking to the next level.
Castello di Radda Vigna il Corno Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione
Gran Selezione wines are only declared during the best years, and this Chianti Classico has taken home numerous top awards: including Decanter and The WineHunter Gold. A truly powerful and complex wine, it offers rich flavours of dark cherry, blackberry, smoke and dried fig. Every sip brings a new sensation, with notes of chocolate, cinnamon and coffee mingling in. Silky smooth tannins and a long, lingering finish make it especially enjoyable.
Orlandi Contucci Ponno, Colline Teramane Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOCG
This Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva has very complex, deep and rounded flavours of Christmas pudding, cocoa and milk chocolate. Having aged for seven years it’s well developed, and the tannins are silky and mellow. That said, the wine has enough potential to continue its evolution: it still bursts with vibrant flavours of black cherry and blackberries supported by fresh acidity. This wine comes from Montepagano Hills in the Colline Teramane subzone, which qualifies for DOCG status – Italy’s highest quality level.
