The Independent newspaper has chosen Peter Zemmer‘s Pinot Grigio Riserva Giatl as “the overall best” of its top ten best dry white wines for summertime sipping. Even better, it earned the title of “best overall wine” – showing that it’s a great all-rounder for the warm months ahead.
A Decanter silver medal-winner, Pinot Grigio Riserva Giatl is a far cry from mass-produced supermarket wines. It’s wonderfully aromatic with flavours of passion fruit, guava and elderflower. John Clarke of The Independent has high praise for it, saying “Pinot Grigio has never tasted so good.” Perhaps this is due to the care and consideration that goes into making it. The grapes are hand-harvested before fermentation in small French oak barriques, adding complex flavours like ginger and honey. Well-balanced and complex, Clarke says “it bursts on to the tongue with a textured fruitiness balanced by a measured acidity.”
The Peter Zemmer winery is set in the foothills of the Alps, in Alto Adige. It’s a family-run affair and was established by the current winemaker’s uncle (also called Peter Zemmer) in 1928. Now in its third generation, it specialises in wines that express the unique character of Alto Adige. In this land, cool glacial winds blow through the vineyards to preserve crisp, juicy and refreshing flavours – resulting in beautifully aromatic and elegant wines. As well as this exceptional barrel-fermented Pinot Grigio, Peter Zemmer also produces high-altitude Pinot Noir and Riesling wines that are worth a try.
