Italy produces wines from 605 grape varieties (MiPAAF), which is more than any other country in the world. In 2019, the country produced an equivalent of 3.3 billion bottles of wine with protected designation of origin (ISEMA). Of course, not all wines are created equal. Veneto is the no.1 producing region with over one billion bottles of wine made each year. Over a third of this is Prosecco. To find the best quality, look for Prosecco from the hilly region of Conegliano-Valdobbiadene DOCG. Piemonte is Italy's no.5 region by volume, but second by value thanks to its highly prized red wines. We're proud to offer excellent examples of Barolo, Barbaresco and award-winning Barbera sourced directly from boutique family producers.
Alto Adige is home to Europe's highest vineyards, and offers wines of excellent quality - from red Lagrein, Pinot Noir and Cabernet, to white Gewürztraminer and Pinot Grigio Riserva.
Toscana makes 91 million bottles of Chianti each year, but only 34 million bottles of the more prestigious Chianti Classico and 9 million bottles of Brunello.
Umbria produces a lot of inexpensive Trebbiano, and only 1 million bottles of Montefalco Sagrantino - we are delighted to offer top-quality versions of this wine. Abruzzo turns out a whopping 86 million bottles of its simple Montepulciano wine - but in terms of quality, we recommend Montepulciano from Colline Teramane DOCG in the north, where only half a million bottles are produced each year.
