Rich and dark wine combining the strengths of three legendary red grapes
Scagliola’s wines are produced by the fifth generation of family winemakers. They’re made from grapes cultivated on the hill of San Siro in Calosso, sandwiched between Monferrato and Langhe in Piedmont. Here, the soil is a unique mixture of sand, turf and rocks, which stresses the vines and encourages them to produce grapes with rich and complex flavours.
In Piedmontese, Azörd means “risk” (hence the tightrope walker on the label!): it reflects the gamble Maggiorino Scagliola made when he decided to plant and combine these three grapes. Two of them – Barbera and Nebbiolo – are renowned in Piedmont, while Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the best “global” varieties. The combination of Barbera (fresh with crisp red fruit flavours), and Nebbiolo (deep with austere tannins) has created a unique wine with a seductive flavour.
This Monferrato Rosso has a dark ruby colour in the glass. It offers a rich taste, with flavours of red plum and blackberries, supported by notes of cloves and cinnamon from ageing in large oak barrels. A touch of raisin, followed by sweet tobacco and leather, hint at the wine’s ageing and development.

Wine Geek –
I visited this vineyard in December last year, and I fell in love with this wine. Tannins are very soft, sweet tobacco and leather makes a totally seductive mix.
