A powerful wine with aromas of fresh and spiced berries, made from Sardinia's signature black grape. Decanter Bronze Medal

This wine is made from Cannonau, a black grape varietal thought to be the most ancient in the Mediterranean. It is super-charged with anti-oxidants and is a key element of the famous Sardinian diet.

The grapes for this wine were harvested by hand. They were then left to macerate for two weeks before fermentation in stainless tanks, at a controlled temperature. Next, it was matured 'sur lie' to develop texture and more complex flavours. Final aging took place in large oak barrels for 12 months, with bottling in the winter of 2019.

Located in the north of Sardinia, Siddùra is recognised as one of the highest-achieving Italian wineries. As well as planting Sardinia’s signature grapes, Cannonau and Vermentino, they also grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese. Every year since 2013 they have won Decanter Gold, Silver, Bronze and Platinum medals – as well as countless awards in Germany, Belgium, Austria and other countries.

Tasting notes

Deep ruby colour with powerful aromas of wild berries and cherry, as well as spicy black pepper. Dry and fresh, with high acidity. Full-bodied, with smooth rounded tannins. A long and silky finish.

"Spèra" means "beam of light" in the dialect of Northern Sardinia, where this fabulous wine is from. As the name suggests, it is incredibly bright and fresh, with flavours of zingy lemon tempered by some minerality. It's exactly what you would expect from Vermentino, Sardinia's signature white grape.

Winemaking

The grapes for this wine were picked by hand in a vineyard in the foothills of the island's mountains. They were then de-stemmed and gently crushed, with the free-run juice fermented at just 12-13 °C  - a very low temperature - in stainless steel tanks. Dino Dini, the winemaker at Siddùra, uses this technique to preserve the fresh flavours of the grape. The wine was matured sur lie for a short time to develop a more complex texture.

Sweet passito wine with concentrated aromas of mango, pineapple, honey and caramel

This is a truly delightful 100% Muscat dessert wine from Sardinia. It's made in the traditional Italian passito method when the grapes are left to dry on the vine - also known as late harvest. This technique is used to create sweet wines with incredibly intense flavours. Nùali is made from 100% Moscato Bianco - or Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains in French.

Grapes are fully ripe by September. Dino Dini, the winemaker at Siddùra, keeps them on the vines until the middle of October – drying them until they are practically raisins. The level of natural sugar in the grapes reaches a remarkable 360 grams per litre – almost 50% more than usual. After the harvest, Dino crushes the grapes and keeps the extra-sweet juice in contact with the skins at a very low temperature (4°C) for three days. During that time, the juice captures plenty of aroma and flavour from the skins.

After maceration, the juice is separated from the skins and is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 16-18°C for twenty-five days. When the level of alcohol in the wine reaches 13%, Dino cools it to stop the fermentation. All of the sweetness in this wine is natural: there is so much sugar in the dried grapes that the yeast can't convert it all into alcohol. The wine spends the next six months maturing sur lie in stainless steel tanks. Dino uses steel rather than oak, to preserve the delicate fruit aromas of Muscat. Finally, the wine is bottled, and continues its maturation in the cellar.

A true masterpiece, Nùali was awarded the highly prestigious Decanter Gold Medal in 2019 as well as numerous other awards.
